DJ & Founder of Prism DJs
Tessa Young is no stranger to music and entrepreneurship. She has successfully married the two by managing her own DJ career as well as founding Prism DJs, LA's first and largest all-female DJ booking agency in California.
She has always had the hustle in her. It started while working at a record store in the 90s where she began her love for finding new music and collecting it. Growing up, her favorite genres were soul, r&b, underground hip-hop, alternative rock, classic rock and electronic music.
Tessa is highly in tune with cool-culture and how music ties in with a brand and it's aesthetic. In the mid-00s, Tessa opened an art and music themed apparel and gift boutique called Grey Matter where where she bought her first set of turntables and would play records all day. Rotating on the in-store TV screen were music infused movies like the documentary Scratch, Dark Days with music by DJ Shadow, Director's Label Series for Spike Jonze, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry, and old skate videos.
Balancing her artistic and entrepreneurial side, Tessa spent many years in the legal industry where she worked as a full-time paralegal. Here, she gained further knowledge for business and contracts.
In 2008, Tessa moved from Reno, Nevada to Los Angeles, California and was graciously given the opportunity to DJ at a lounge called Wurstküche in Downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District. She quickly became known for her indie dance mixes, while incorporating all the other musical knowledge she had acquired over the years.
Tessa’s combined love for music, culture, business and entrepreneurship brought Tessa to where she is today: A full-time DJ and owner of a DJ booking agency. Her goal is to continue moving forward with her personal DJ career, while building and contributing to the success of her booking agency Prism DJs.
