Netflix’s Do Revenge Premiere Afterparty

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that all things ‘90s are making a comeback right now – music, fashion, and even film. Netflix brilliantly followed suit with this trend, producing the teen rom-com/dramedy Do Revenge, starring Mayak Hawke and Camila Mendes. I had the privilege of performing as the movie’s premiere event DJ for the afterparty at The Hollywood Roosevelt’s Tropicana Pool on September 14, 2022.

A nod to ‘90s teen classics like Clueless and Heathers (which were two of my favorites growing up), Do Revenge tells the story of two very different high school students whose worlds (and ambitions) collide when they discover their common ground: the need to ‘do revenge’ against those who’ve wronged them. The film’s cast and crew phenomenally blended those vintage archetypes with modern throwback trends, and that style was on full display at this premiere afterparty.

As a Hollywood DJ, I love themed events that allow me to pair my music and fashion. I always look forward to selecting outfits to match themes. For this particular affair, I chose a lavender plaid blazer skirt set from Revolve, the incredible online store where I get most of my outfits. I was giving off major Cher Horowitz vibes while spinning tracks poolside, the perfect backdrop for a film set in Miami. And since ‘90s and ‘00s alternative music, grunge, and pop rock are having a resurgence and inspiring current musicians, I was able to fuse old and new tunes from those genres as well as indie-electronic, indie dance, and Latin, with mostly female bands taking center stage–a win for any female DJ.

The client specifically requested I play a mix between my Olivia Rodrigo premiere playlist and the Do Revenge soundtrack. It was so fun for me to revisit the OR playlist, and the film’s soundtrack gave me so much incredible content to work with. Some of my favorite selections for this setlist were Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon,” Robyn’s “Do You Know (What it Takes),” Wet Leg’s “Wet Dream,” Warpaint’s “New Song” (Mike D Remix), Meredith Brooks’s “Bitch,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “Brutal,” Rosalía’s “Milionària,” Amaarae’s “Sad Girlz Luv Money,” Tate McRae’s “She’s All I Want to Be,” and Cranberries’ “Dreams.” And no ‘90s and ‘00s pop punk-inspired event would be complete without a sing-along to The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” – the perfect way to close out this very fun and special night.

Having grown up in the ‘90s when this movie genre was taking over the world, it was an absolute dream to be the Netflix DJ for the Do Revenge premiere afterparty. I am so grateful to Netflix and the Benarroch Productions team for having me and allowing me to enjoy the night and perform as a representative of Prism DJs.
